HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY

                                         THANK YOU ECFCU MEMBERS

Erie Community Federal Credit Union has achieved this 50th milestone because of our MEMBERS! Many changes have taken place over the past 50 years. However, Erie Community has never lost sight of the fact that our MEMBERS are the owners, and continued to put their money and trust in our Credit Union for the past 50 years!

Reserve Federal Credit Union first organized in the basement at 216 Schiller Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio. The Credit Union received a federal charter on September 25, 1958 as the “Ford Sandusky Employees Federal Credit Union.” In 2001 a community charter was granted, and the name was changed to Erie Community Federal Credit Union. The Huron, Ohio branch was opened in June, 2003.

Erie Community is community! We have participated in clothing drives, food drives and donated to many charitable events and organizations for many years.

Erie Community operates on the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People,” and intends to offer financial services to members for the next 50 years and beyond!

In celebration and thanks to our membership, we have planned many promotions and events for the entire month of September for our 50th Anniversary. Please click on the link: ASP/Services/services.asp and this will take you to our “What’s New” page for complete details on our special events and promotions!

Statewide Messages Stating ‘Suspended Services’ are a Scam

Ohioans targeted by fraudulent phishing attack posing as credit unions

Dublin, Ohio (August 21, 2008) – Thousands of Ohioans have been receiving messages via text, email, and voicemail stating their services were suspended, followed by a phone number to call.  The Ohio Credit Union League is urging recipients of these messages to not call this number because it is a phishing scam.  Instead, call your financial institution directly to report your receipt of the message so they may alert the proper authorities and place a hold on your account if necessary.  At present, there have been five unique phishing scams purporting to be from credit unions in the past two days.
Special Agent Harry Trombitas of the FBI said customers who have received these messages should also report the information directly to the FBI at www.ic3.gov for investigation.  Anyone who provided their personal information to the fraudsters should go immediately to the FTC's website at www.ftc.gov/idtheft and follow the steps provided to minimize their losses and help protect their good credit.
Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to try to access sensitive information by appearing as a trusted source.  In this case, the message appears to be sent by a credit union or financial institution asking you to contact them.  The message is similar to the following: Your Credit Union of Ohio services was suspended for suspicious activity, call us; and is followed by a long distance phone number.  Other credit union names and phone numbers have been used.  Once the call is placed, an automatic message prompts the caller to enter their credit or debit card information.
“Information at credit unions have not been compromised and this is not a data theft.  This is an attempt to contact people directly and prompt them to give their personal information,” said Paul Mercer, President of the League.  “We want to make sure Ohioans are aware of this attempt and encourage them to call their financial institution if they get a message to help us thwart future phishing attacks.”
The attacks were originally concentrated in Central Ohio, but other messages have been received by consumers scattered throughout the state.  All Ohioans should be aware in case the targeted areas expand.  Also, consumers should be aware of how their financial institution would contact them should account irregularities occur.
To thwart the phishing attempts, the League is asking its member credit unions to communicate directly with their members and post notifications on their Web sites.  Additionally, the League has made contact with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the FBI, the Federal Communication Commission, and the Federal Trade Commission to alert them of the fraud attempt and to request the phone numbers be blocked.

The Ohio Credit Union League, with offices in Dublin, is a state trade association representing 438 credit unions. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions owned and democratically controlled by their members. Ohio credit unions provide savings, loans, and other consumer financial services to their 2.6 million members. To learn more, visit www.OhioCreditUnions.org.
