Credit Union Myth or Fact? Let’s Set the Record Straight!
Think you know credit unions? 🤔 There are plenty of misconceptions floating around about what credit unions are, who can join, and what they offer. Let’s have a little fun and separate MYTH from FACT!
❌ MYTH: Credit unions are basically the same as banks.
✅ FACT: Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members. When you join a credit union, you become a member-owner—not simply a customer.
❌ MYTH: Credit unions don’t have modern technology.
✅ FACT: Credit unions can offer many of the same conveniences you expect from larger financial institutions, including online and mobile banking, debit cards, electronic payments, remote deposit and more.
❌ MYTH: Your money isn’t insured at a credit union.
✅ FACT: At federally insured credit unions like Erie Community Federal Credit Union, member deposits are insured by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, administered by the NCUA. Individual accounts are generally insured up to $250,000, with additional coverage available for certain ownership categories.
❌ MYTH: You have to work for a certain company to join a credit union.
✅ FACT: Not necessarily! Credit unions have different fields of membership. Some are employer-based, while others serve communities or geographic areas.
❌ MYTH: Bigger always means better.
✅ FACT: Bigger isn't automatically better—or worse. Credit unions are designed around serving their members. For many people, having a financial institution focused on its members and local communities is exactly what they're looking for.
💙 So...how many did you know?
Credit unions might work a little differently than you thought! Understanding those differences can help you make better decisions about where and how you manage your money.
